Aids & adaptations for people with disabilities
If you, or a member of your family, are disabled it may be possible to adapt your home to make life easier. In most cases we will need the advice of an Occupational Therapist on the best way to meet your needs.
Minor adaptations
The type of minor adaptations we may be able to carry out include:
· Installation of grab rails or handrails
· Installation of fixed toilet frames
· Installation of lever taps to washbasins, sinks and baths
We will arrange for minor adaptations to be fitted as soon as possible, generally after receiving a recommendation by an Occupational Therapist or Adult Care Services. Minor adaptations are funded through a special budget set aside by Hightown for this purpose.
Requests for minor adaptations will be treated in the same manner as routine repairs, and we aim to carry them out within 28 days of the order being placed. Unless we need to get a quote for the work, we will place the order for the work within 1 week of receiving your request.
Major adaptations
Major adaptations will need to be funded through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG). Your Occupational Therapist or Local Authority can advise you on how to apply for the grant. The Disabled Facilities Grant is means tested, and you may be required to make a contribution towards the cost of the work.
Major Adaptations might include
· Installing a level access shower to replace a bath
· Installing a permanent ramp to a doorway
· Installing stair lifts or through floor lifts
· Internal alterations to walls and doorways
Moving as an alternative to adaptations
Sometimes it is not practical for us to carry out adaptations to your home, because of its size, construction, location or the amount of adaptations required. In these situations we may encourage you to move to a property more suited to your needs, or one that is more easily adapted.
