Cash boost for Open Door Night Shelter

27.11.2007

LOCAL charity, Open Door has benefited from a donation of £1400 from The Three Valleys Club.

Three Valleys is a social and community fundraising group for men and women in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. Each year the group supports one local and one national charity. This year the Open Door Night Shelter and Drop in Centre in St Albans was the selected local charity.

Over the last year The Three Valleys Club have raised £1400 for Open Door by holding murder mystery nights, helping at rotary cycle rides, fundraising at the Highland gathering in Harpenden, car park collection in Watford and several other smaller events.

John Wright and Valerie Wills from Open Door were presented with the cheque by Three Valleys at Wheathampstead Social Club on Thursday November 21, 2007.

Valerie Wills, from Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association and the Open Door Volunteers’ Coordinator, said: “We are extremely grateful for this generous donation from Three Valleys. The Open Door night shelter offers 16 beds every night of the year to homeless people in the area. At this time of year with the temperatures falling below zero and Christmas on the horizon the homeless people in the St Albans areas are extremely dependent on the night shelter and the facilities available.

“For Open Door to operate we rely on fundraising and donations. Each year we need to raise £75,000 in the community to help fund the night shelter and drop in day service. This cheque from Three Valleys is fantastic but we still need more donations and for people to volunteer at the shelter. If you are able to help us then please contact me on 0791 263 1393.”

Linda Kerslake, from Three Valleys, added: “Three Valleys members are typically 30-40 years old and want to get the most out of life, so an active social life, full of variety is a high priority. At the same time we want other people to benefit from the groups enthusiasm – hence the fundraising and charity work.

“Supporting the Open Door Night Shelter is just the sort of thing Three Valleys should be doing.”
