An official sod-cutting ceremony took place on Wednesday November 13 to mark work starting on a development of supported living apartments in Jupiter Drive, Hemel Hempstead.
Sally Newton, Executive Member of Adult Care Services and Health, was joined by representatives from Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association, Jarvis Contractors and staff and residents from the current home.
The new development is being built in Jupiter Drive as part of a two-phased project. The first phase is the development of a three-storey building of 14 one bedroom supported living apartments for people with learning disabilities. Within the development there will be a number of communal areas for residents to use and socialise.
The development is expected to be completed in Autumn 2008. When the scheme is complete residents from an existing supported living services at 150 Jupiter Drive, opposite the development site, will move into the supported accommodation. Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association will manage the new housing development and Hertfordshire County Council provide the support services.
After the new residents move across the road to their new homes, the old building will be demolished. The vacant land will then be used as part of the second phase of the development programme and 13 apartments will be built. The new apartments will be available to purchase under the shared ownership scheme.
Andrew Duckworth, Director of Care at Hightown Praetorian & Churches, said:
“The development at Jupiter Drive is a very good example of agencies working together and the start of work is very exciting.
“The main aim of the project is to develop a new complex of supported living apartments allowing people with learning disabilities to live independently in their own homes and also give them opportunities to socialise in communal areas and receive care and support if and when it is needed.”
Sally Newton, Executive Member of Adult Care Services and Health, said: “This is going to be a fantastic scheme and I’m delighted that work is underway. Supported living is an excellent way of ensuring people with learning disabilities enjoy their independence while also receiving the care and support they need.”
Jeffrey Hollis, Director of Marketing for Jarvis, added: “We are delighted to be constructing our third building of this category for Hertfordshire County Council and also another project in Hemel Hempstead for the Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association.”
