Parliamentary hustings for people with learning disabilities

20.04.2010

Hightown invited the parliamentary candidates from the three main political parties in Aylesbury to meet with people who have learning disabilities to talk about their party’s policies and what they will do if they get elected.

Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association (Hightown), arranged for service users with learning disabilities to come along to meet the people who are hoping to represent them in parliament, as well as discuss why it is important to vote. The meeting took place 16th April at Trinity Court in Aylesbury and over 30 people with learning disabilities attended.  Steven Lambert (the Liberal Democrat candidate), David Lidington (the Conservative candidate and sitting MP) and Kathryn White (the Labour candidate) were there to talk about what their parties will do if they get elected.

People with learning disabilities share many of the same concerns as the rest of the community – for example getting jobs, feeling safe, getting good services and being treated with respect.  Many questions were put forward by the service users to the candidates, which started some interesting debates on subjects such as public transport and petty crime.

This was an important event for people with learning disabilities as it makes sure that they use their right to vote.

Hightown is a well established provider of support to people with learning disabilities, both in the community and living in our own supported housing schemes. Our services are focused on enabling people to get the most out of life.
