Hightown United up for the Championship League

20.11.2009

Young men from Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association’s (Hightown) Young People’s Housing Service (YPHS) have received sponsorship from Umbro Teamwear, Watford Borough Council, Football Invasion and Herts Sports partnership, enabling them to play in Football Invasion’s 6-a-side League.

To build their team skills and confidence, the six young men from YPHS in Hemel Hempstead and Watford recently played in a 5-a-side Charity Tournament. They had an outstanding performance and took home the third place trophy, which has since taken pride of place at their hostels, and inspired them to want to enter a league.

Keen to build on this success, and further develop their skills and fitness, the Hightown United team wanted to enter Football Invasion’s 6-a-side league on Monday evenings at Westfield School in Watford. With the help of Caroline Roche, the Sports Development Officer for Watford Borough Council, they now have a full kit from Umbro Teamwear and Watford Borough Council, Herts Sports Partnership and Football Invasion have sponsored the team’s match fees.

Karen King, a Support Worker at the YPHS hostel in Watford said “Getting involved in regular activities, and learning to support each other and work as a team are really important skills for these young men to develop. Without the help of Watford Borough Council and Football Invasion, they would not have had this opportunity.”

The Young People’s Housing Service, operated by Hightown, provides supported accommodation to young, single people who are estranged from their families, with the aim of preparing them to live independently.
