Grover Close in running for major award

13.11.2009

A development of 56 affordable homes on the edge of Hemel Hempstead’s Old town has been nominated for the prestigious ‘Building for Life’ award. The scheme in Grover Close, owned and developed by Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association (Hightown), has been commended for its distinctive design, and the provision of a large number of high quality homes and communal areas in a small area.

The ‘Building for Life’ awards recognise house builders and housing associations that demonstrate a commitment to well designed homes and neighbourhoods and sustainable development.  The high profile panel of judges, chaired by Wayne Hemingway MBE the well known designer and artist, will announce their decision in December.

The site was previously occupied by just eight houses, but the flats are designed and positioned so that the development fits well into the surrounding neighbourhood. An underground car park provides parking with lifts and stairs connecting to the apartments. Modern features include a video entry phone system allowing greater security for the residents. The homes are particularly ‘eco’ friendly with high insulation levels and solar thermal heating panels, which provide hot water on site.

David Bogle, Chief Executive of Hightown, said: “We are delighted to be able to provide new affordable homes of a standard high enough to be considered for this award. I would like to thank everyone who has worked with us in delivering this development of affordable homes. This site has been completed to the highest quality and we are pleased to be able to help so many local people who have a real housing need.”

The project has been supported financially by the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA). It also received a grant from the low Carbon Buildings Programme run by the BRE. The development was designed by Buschow Henley Architects.
