Hightown help meet the need for affordable housing in Dacorum

26.02.2009

Residents in Adeyfield are already enjoying the benefits of new, affordable homes in Oatridge Gardens, Wood Lane End.

Forty eight houses and apartments have now been completed for Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association (HPCHA), on a site that was previously occupied by just 7 houses. HPCHA purchased and developed the site at a cost of £9.1 million, with £1.79 million support from the Housing and Communities Agency.

The new development comprises a mix of two-bedroom apartments and two-, three- and four-bedroom houses. Twelve houses have been rented to residents nominated by Dacorum Borough Council. 36 homes have been made available to part-buy and part-rent through shared ownership with HPCHA.

Conveniently located for Maylands Business Park as well as local schools and facilities, the development provides much needed affordable housing on a brown field site – so significantly contributing to Dacorum’s Housing Strategy.

To mark the completion of the project, the Mayor of Dacorum, Councillor Mrs Carol Green, officially opened the new development on Thursday 12 February 2009.

David Bogle, Chief Executive of HPCHA, said: “We are pleased to be able to provide these additional high quality homes for local residents, in partnership with Dacorum Borough Council. The mix of homes reflects local housing needs, offering opportunities for those on low incomes to rent accommodation, or through low cost home ownership schemes purchase a home of their own.”

Sustainable issues have also been considered in the design of these houses, which have achieved the 'Very Good' eco-homes rating. Features include high levels of insulation, double-glazing and low energy lighting, which also benefit residents with lower fuel bills. The development was built by Hertfordshire House builders Jarvis Group.
