Mayor of Dacorum opens Westcroft House - Learning Disabilities Scheme

18.12.2008

Hightowns' recently refurbished development of ten apartments for people with learning disabilities was officially opened by the Mayor of Dacorum, Cllr Carol Green on November 26th 2008.

The homes are part of an extended development located at Western Road, Tring. The building at 1 Westcroft House was previously used as a Care Home for people with learning disabilities and was managed by another care agency.

Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association now own and manage the building and since taking full management of Westcroft House, decided that the home needed refurbishment. In 2007 work started to refurbish the building into 10 self-contained apartments consisting of 1x bed units. Nine of these units are for the residents and one is used as staff accommodation/office.

Director of Care, Andrew Duckworth, from Hightown Praetorian & Churches Housing Association, said: “This recently refurbished scheme in Western Road, Tring, provides supported housing for people with learning disabilities. The new homes provide a perfect environment for people with learning disabilities to live independently. All the residents also have a support package and are allocated a key worker”

Mayor of Dacorum, Councillor Carol Green, added: “I welcome the opportunity to say a few words about the new development that has just been opened in Tring at Westcroft House. This unique development provides self contained accommodation for 9 people with learning disabilities. The development also provides accommodation for a member of staff to be present 24 hours a day which means there is help available in an emergency.”

She went on to say, “I was able to tour the flats and meet with the occupants who were all very pleased with their accommodation. I would like to commend the architects on their clever use of the available space and incorporation of an extension that blends in well with the original house. It is always very difficult when trying to adapt older buildings to modern needs, but this has been achieved at Westcroft House as well as providing accommodation for those who need wheelchair access. The residents I met were all enthusiastic about their new start in life at Westcroft House and everything possible has been done to keep them in a safe environment”
