My story - Charles

Since moving into Hightown’s supported living scheme in Wing seven years ago, Charles’ life has changed completely. Charles has a learning disability and finds it difficult to communicate with words.

Charles struggles with aspects of his life which sometimes affect his behaviour, through respectful one to one support from Hightown staff, he has overcome many aspects of his challenging behaviour and is now able to do many things that he found difficult in the past. For example, he takes weekly trips food shopping, and loves his car and going out for a drive. Charles really likes going on day trips to the coast, walks in the countryside and to the tidy tip and tries to help everyone else while he is there! Charles loves planes, trains and buses. When he is out and hears a plane he will look up and watch until it disappears.

A huge landmark this year was Charles going on the first holiday of his life. With the help of two Hightown staff, Charles travelled to North Norfolk, where he stayed in a cottage. He clearly enjoyed the whole experience, and took great pleasure in being by the sea side, visiting many of the coastal towns.
