My story - Adam
Coming from a steady background, Adam obtained a Masters degree and went on to do a PhD, before starting a good job and setting up home with his girlfriend. Unfortunately whilst a student he had started taking drugs, and this became part of his new lifestyle, until a combination of drug abuse and a volatile relationship resulted in him being sectioned and admitted to a mental health ward.
On being discharged from hospital, Adam managed to get another job, however even with the support of his family and colleagues, his continued cannabis misuse affected his mental health to the extent that he ended up back in hospital a couple more times.
The third time he was discharged from hospital he found himself both unemployed and homeless, so was referred to
Mably House by
Welwyn & Hatfield District Council. Adam’s support worker at Mably House supported him through some very difficult times, involving mental health organisations as required. His support plan included setting goals for him to achieve, which helped to boost his confidence. Having his own self-contained flat within Mably House gave him the space that he needed to recover.
With the help of the
Community Mental Health Team, Adam was finally prescribed the right medication. He has now held down a good job for over 8 months, has bought himself a car, and is actively looking for a home of his own. He said “None of this would have been possible without the support and encouragement of the staff at
Mably House. Although the thought of moving on is somewhat scary, I know that the staff will be there to support me through my move and continue to support me for 6 weeks after I have my own place.”
